For the love of the outdoors! “DCMA Fossil Walk”
Saturday, May 25, 10am-2pm
Discover Ontario’s fossil riches on a guided walk through one of Dufferin’s most geologically rich parks. Learn close-up what the natural landscape teaches us about our past. Hiking shoes required. Please bring your own litter-less lunch and dress according to weather conditions. Park location will be given at time of registration. Please note that it is illegal to remove fossils from Ontario Parks…participants will take only photos and leave only footprints.

“An Amusing Journey Through the Orangeville Sun Newspaper”

Religion, politics and booze competed with local news for space in the small town newspapers of yesteryear, and the Orangeville Sun was no exception. From its birth in 1861 to the final edition in 1933, the Sun documented the strengths and failings of the human condition with wit, wisdom and a dash of whimsy. Enjoy this Sunday afternoon presentation by one of our region’s most talented authors and speakers, Ken Weber. Ken is also the “Historic Hills” columnist for In The Hills magazine. Cash bar and reception to follow in the Museum’s Main Gallery.

The Big Event! 15th Annual Corn Flower Festival
Sunday, June 2, 10am-4pm
Corn Flower enthusiasts, collectors and their often bewildered partners and friends all come together to celebrate 15 big years of the DCMA’s Annual Corn Flower Festival and the Museum’s extraordinary (and massive) collection of original and many rare pieces of authentic W. J. Hughes Corn Flower. Festival day provides an opportunity to trade Corn Flower stories and collections, and to meet the owners and former operators of the Corn Flower company, Pete and Lois (Hughes) Kayser. The Kaysers will share stories of what is was like to run the operation, from cutting to sales, as well as personal reminiscences of “Jack” Hughes himself. “Share Sessions” for collectors, guest speakers, a live auction and consignment sale of genuine coloured Corn Flower are all part of this full and enjoyable day. Lunch and light refreshment available on site in the DCMA tearoom.

“Resources for Writers in the DCMA Archives Collections”

“Canadians At War”

Mulmur resident, Hugh Brewster is the author of four award-winning books about Canadians under fire that have won acclaim with readers of all ages. At Vimy Ridge is the winner of the 2008 Norma Fleck Award for the best Canadian non-fiction book for young readers. At Juno Beach won the 2006 Information Book Award and Dieppe: Canada’s Darkest Day of World War II was hailed by the Globe and Mail in 2009 as “simply superb.” The experiences described to him by veterans of the Dieppe Raid inspired the novel Prisoner of Dieppe which won the 2012 Hackmatack Award. Proceeds from this presentation will support a Dufferin County veteran accompanying Shelburne high school students on a November 2013 tour of European battlefields. Corporal John McMurray, Dufferin County Paramedic, of Orangeville will be introduced at this event. Ticket price includes a wine and cheese reception following the presentation. Please join us and help support our local veterans, local high school students, and the preservation of our community’s military history.
Tickets: $20.00 for DCMA Members, $25.00 for non-members. Additional donations of $20 or more to this good cause will receive a receipt for income tax purposes.
The DCMA’s Annual Student Art Show Party & Awards Ceremony!

The DCMA in partnership with Headwater Arts is always honoured to host this fun and exciting annual show and sale of original art works, featuring the very best from local and area high schools: Banting Memorial in Alliston, Centre Dufferin in Shelburne, Erin District, Humberview in Bolton, Mayfield Secondary, Orangeville District and Westside, and Robert F. Hall in Caledon East. See the show in the Museum’s Silo Gallery from May 11th to June 16th. Come to the party and ceremony on Father’s Day as we recognize the talents of the students through live music and the presentation of visual art awards including People’s Choice and Art Program of the Year. Proud teachers, parents and grandparents: this is your event! Light refreshment will be available.

Historic Art Exhibit: Familiar Landscapes – Roy Austin (1910-1997)

Roy Austin is ironically not a household name today in Dufferin County, but is a well-known and respected Canadian artist on the national art scene. Austin was raised in Orangeville before studying under some of Canada’s greatest artists, including J.W. Beatty, J.E.H. MacDonald, Franklin Carmichael and Yvonne McKague Housser. This special Historic Art Exhibit features (12) original and rarely seen works by this talented artist and one-time Dufferin resident. For the opening, DCMA Curator Wayne Townsend will take guests on a retrospective journey that is sure to educate and inform, and reacquaint the community with artist Roy Austin’s marvelous works and fascinating story.

Launch of DCMA’s new online information portal “DuffStuff”

“DuffStuff” is a new and powerful research tool for paid members of the Museum, allowing online access to a growing base of information on items (artifacts, documents, photos and more) in the DCMA’s collections. This includes the ever-growing online “Dufferin County Virtual War Memorial,” which catalogues and honours war veterans from our community, from very early conflicts to current day Afghanistan. Other major offerings from DuffStuff include information on businesses in Dufferin County, historic settlements, and a constantly expanding number of “famous people from Dufferin County.” (Or infamous, as the case may be!) For the official launch day of DuffStuff, DCMA staff, volunteers and consultants gather in the Main Gallery to host visitors for fun, food and information. See and experience the DuffStuff program during the launch through regular demonstrations and opportunities to test drive it yourself! We are honoured to open our launch event with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 233, Orangeville, at 2 pm – come out to support our troops and cadets.

Dufferin County Heritage Fair & Public Open House

Keynote Address at 1:30 pm: “How Heritage, Arts and Culture Is Good Business for Smaller Communities”
The DCMA is honoured to host this important public gathering to introduce the individuals and associations working hard for the cause of heritage preservation and promotion in our community. Visitors will meet members of local historical societies and heritage groups as they share information about their purpose, activities, projects and products in a fun and “fair-like” environment. Our keynote speaker, Sue Powell, is an Economic Development Consultant at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; an award-winning visual artist; and longtime member and supporter of the DCMA.
DCMA Summer Concert Series
Concert 1 – “Local Composers”

Our 2013 summer concert series starts off the season showcasing the talents of young musicians from Dufferin County. Will Devonshire, a classical guitarist from Orton, will be performing some of his original numbers on guitar, piano and vocals that he’s spent many years composing. Jean-Marc Lacoursiere, another local youth, is a musician who has been working on his craft for almost 20 years. Lacoursiere picked up the guitar at the age of twelve and has been expanding on an ever growing repertoire of songs, styles with different instruments. He will be playing a variety of his compositions with guitar, violin, piano and voice. Concert 1 takes place in Historic Corbetton Church on the Museum grounds, and a brief reception with light refreshment follows the performance.

DCMA’s Annual Golf Day Fundraiser (offsite)

Support your favourite community museum while you spend the day on the links at a beautiful private golf course in the Mulmur Hills. Your ticket price helps raise funds for the Museum & Archives, and includes 18 holes of golf, a delicious barbeque lunch prepared by Museum volunteers and supporters, and the chance to win some pretty nice door prizes! Proceeds from this event will support a Dufferin County veteran accompanying Shelburne high school students on a November 2013 tour of European battlefields. The 2013 summer concert series ends with local blues and jazz great Debbie Jordan, live in the church on the Museum grounds during the Vintage Car Show steps away outside (see listing above). Make a day of it! Come for the Car Show and stay for the music, fun and food. Debbie Jordan was an East Coast recording artist who came west to find fame and fortune. Instead she found a man, got married, had a baby and now, after an eight year hiatus is coming back stronger than ever. She has worked with such East Coast favorites as The Rankins, Rita MacNeil and Kim Stockwood. She also appeared weekly on a CBC Halifax TV show. Debbie now works at Orangeville’s newest spot for casual fine dining “Forage” and often sits at the restaurant’s piano for a few numbers in between tables! Come and see her live at the DCMA on this fun day. Unticketed event - entrance to the concert is “pay what you can” on site.

DCMA’s Annual Magical Technicolour Fall Bus Tour

Board the magic bus with Curator Wayne Townsend as he takes passengers on a colour filled adventure through some of the lesser known nooks and crannies of Dufferin County. Ticket price includes a delicious lunch at an interesting stop along the way. Passengers should bring comfortable shoes and a camera to capture the day’s moments and memories. Join us for a witty and hilarious evening of fractured history of Dufferin County as told by the ever-popular and untrained historian Dan Needles. The local and legendary Dan Needles is best known as the playwright behind the popular Wingfield Series which has played across Canada for many years, loosely based on Dan’s experiences growing up in Rosemont. Ticket price includes a fitting post-presentation reception complete with local hard cider and homemade pies made by Dan’s sister, current Dufferin County Warden, Laura Ryan. Proceeds from this fundraiser to support the publication of a book on the Museum’s extensive quilt collection.

“Managing Our Waste”

Always a hot topic, waste is something we all have to deal with on a daily basis, in our homes and in our communities. Come to learn about what the County is doing to manage our waste and reduce what is going to landfill. Hear about how the Blue Box and Green Bin programs work and where we are heading in the future at the “Dufferin Eco-Energy Park.” Gather information about current household waste management and diversion programs, and buy your garbage bag tags while you’re here! Anniversary Celebration “Looking Back, Going Forward”

It was 20 years ago that news of Theatre Orangeville’s creation and a new Dufferin County Museum & Archives facility was presented in the very first issue of In the Hills Magazine. This year, over an early October weekend, the DCMA is proud to host an anniversary celebration for all three of us, featuring witty speeches, tons of reminiscences, random acts of theatre and performance, displays of objects and print materials from the early years, and good food and drink from local restaurants. The three of us are excited to invite our members, supporters, volunteers, advertisers, writers, artists, actors and friends to gather together and wonder where the time has gone! Come and renew old friendships….and memberships! Watch for details of this grand celebration in In the Hills and on Theatre Orangeville and DCMA websites. Entry by donation to Theatre Orangeville or Dufferin County Museum & Archives…David Nairn and Wayne Townsend will perform feats of strength to “earn” your large donations!

“Tears, Triumphs and Train Wrecks On-air and Off with Bernadette Hardaker”

Getting to the heart of the story can sometimes be the story itself. Whether as an on-air host for CBC Radio One in Toronto – writing life stories for clients – or collecting oral histories from Dufferin elders, veteran interviewer Bernadette Hardaker has had her moments. Hardaker, from Orangeville, will share some of her best and worst stories from the last 35 years from her side of the microphone. Belly-laughs at Bernadette’s expense are guaranteed!

Fall Storytelling Event Live in Historic Corbetton Church

The Dufferin Arts Council and the Dufferin County Museum & Archives present an evening of stories by the ever-popular Dufferin Circle of Storytellers and featuring live music accompaniment by local musicians. The magic happens in the beautiful and intimate surroundings of Historic Corbetton Church on the DCMA grounds. Once the evening’s tales conclude, refreshments, more music and social time await you in the Museum’s Main Gallery.

Old Time Hymn Sing in Historic Corbetton Church

Enjoy an afternoon of singing and listening to good old time hymns and gospel favourites. A special choir of local performers will sing these old favorites in four part harmony, and a soloist will demonstrate how the same types of song worked for a single voice in the small rural churches. Congregational hymn singing is an important part of this event, so please come prepared by knowing if you will be sitting in the soprano, alto, bass or tenor sections. Laughs and lemonade follow in the museum! Please note: in lieu of admission, a collection will be taken with proceeds to offset the maintenance costs of Historic Corbetton Church.

Press, Propaganda and the Official Record:
See and experience how fascinating images of the Canadian Army Film and Photo Unit and two war photographers from Dufferin - Ken Bell and Gerald Richardson – influenced our local and Canadian view of World War II. PLUS ON EXHIBIT from November 2 to November 13 is a collection of Richardson’s original photographs.
War Tales from Dufferin:
World War II abounded with stories and Dufferin County was no exception. Learn the truth behind the story of Etsel Cook and Kurt Meyer’s stand-off after D-Day, about the HMCS Orangeville and more. Presented by Archivist, Steve Brown.
Tickets: $10.00 for both talks.
DCMA 25th Silver Anniversary Weekend:
All About Silver Event” and Fundraising Antique Sale
Saturday, November 16 and Sunday November 17, 10am-5pm
In September 1988, the County of Dufferin hired a young guy named Townsend and passed a by-law to create the Dufferin County Museum & Archives. The DCMA was temporarily located in the old registry office at 53 Zina Street in Orangeville while a new state-of-the-art barn was took shape and eventually opened in November of 1994 at the corner of Highway 89 and Airport Road. To recognize this “dual” milestone, the DCMA is holding a weekend of themed activities and events.
“All About Silver:”
• Bring along your silver treasures to be dated and identified by experts.
• A very exclusive exhibit of Canadian Silver from private collections will be a definite highlight of the weekend. Items on display date from the early 1800s to the 1960s and are all made by identified Canadian silversmiths and companies.
• A special presentation on Canadian Silver takes place at 2:00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.• DCMA curatorial staff will be on-hand to accept donations of unwanted, unused or broken silver or silver coins to be sold to raise funds for DCMA artifact acquisitions. Tax Receipts can be issued for their value.
• Admission $3.00 per person, Free to anyone donating silver. Silver ID $3.00 per item.
Fundraising Antique Sale:
Take-in a special Antique and Collectibles Sale of items that our members and patrons no longer need. There will be a large selection of quality items at prices reasonable and quality and variety exceptional. Unlike more organized antique shows this will be filled with unpicked items and sure to have lots of unusual items (we know how eclectic our friends can be!). This is also a fundraiser for future DCMA artifact acquisitions.
10th Annual “Holiday Treasures” Art & Craft Show & Sale
Saturday, November 23 to Sunday, December 8
Always the perfect gift-buying stop before the holidays! Find handmade, one-of-a-kind items for everyone on your list while you enjoy the festive atmosphere of the Museum at Christmastime. One stop shopping. Over 40 artists and artisans transform the Museum's Main Gallery into a seasonal show and sale of unique handcrafted gifts, perfect for the person who has everything. One-of-a-kind items include candles and candlesticks, clothing, jewellery, baskets, two and three dimensional works of art, seasonal wreaths and decorations, wooden bowls, hooked rugs, honey, bath products and much more! Admission: A special reduced admission rate of $3.00 (plus HST) applies during this show and includes full access to all exhibits and galleries in the Museum.
Annual Museum Christmas Concert

Enjoy seasonal music in Historic Corbetton Church on the Museum Grounds, beautifully decked out in holiday finery. Our guest performers are always local (and great!) and the music and song will bring back treasured memories of Christmases past. Ticket price includes admission to the Museum, the “Holiday Treasures” art and craft show, and reception complete with yuletide goodies and hot cider. Contact us to purchase or reserve your tickets.
