Learning Seniors Programs
Seniors Programs

The memories of our senior citizens are a precious community resource. To reminisce is an important part of aging. Remembering life experiences and sharing them with others is a healthy experience for all involved.

The DCMA is pleased to offer reminiscence programs for seniors residences and nursing homes. Our trained staff will deliver a hands on program with 12 different subjects, a new one each month of the year. See the schedule below. Each program is geared to evoke a range of memories from bittersweet to laughter. Some programs are delivered in period costume. Our interpreters possess loud, clear voices. In a dignified manner, the programs often draw on memories of the very distant past.

Programs are approximately one hour in length. Available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only.

Remembering Winter

Catalogue Shopping

Maple Syrup Time

Spring into Spring

Participants will be encouraged to share their stories of winters past. Recalling the worse snow storm, the best ice skating, the hill they ran their sleighs down and what did their sleighs look like. There will also be plenty of pictures to look at from our Archives to stimulate a memory. Brrrrrrrr get the hot chocolate ready!

We will bring a large collection of Catalogues dating from 1918 – 1980’s. Looking through these catalogues will bring back many memories of years past. Checking out the fashions to garden equipment always brings out a chuckle or two. We want to hear stories of mail order shopping, good or bad.

Our costumed interpreter will arrive in costume straight out of an 1860’s pioneer sugar bush. Just smell the air and you will be catch the aroma of smoky fire and sweet maple. We will tell the story of a day in the sugar bush through artifacts and pictures. Samples of syrup are available upon request.

Hats, Hats, who doesn’t like to wear a hat? We will supply a large collection of hats to be worn by all. Participants will be asked to remember a story from their lives to match the hat. The collection ranges from fancy Easter hats to band conductors hats. Join in the fun and bring your own hat and story to go with it.

Artifact ID

First Nations

Picture Perfect

General Store

Artifact Identification is very important to help with recall memory. We arrive on site with a traveling trunk filled with items of curiosities that have been used in the past, either on the farm or in the kitchen and household. Participants may recall seeing these items at their parents or grandparents.

National Aboriginal Day is celebrated in June. Your residents will be enlightened on the way of life of the First Nations people before European contact. We will provide artifacts and lore of the First Nations.

Let’s remember those picture perfect days of the family picnics and holiday’s. Participants will be encouraged to tell story’s of their favorite holiday and picnic place. Many pictures from our archives of summer fun will be passed around for all to enjoy and to spark memory!

Those were the days when you went to the General Store to stock up on supplies. The smells of the bulk products and catching up on local gossip may be long gone, but not forgotten.

The Colours of Autumn

Remembering the War

All About Christmas

How many miles did you have to walk up hill both ways to get to school? Let’s recall memories of our school days. Artifacts and pictures from our archives accompany this program.

Fall fairs, picking apples & pumpkins, drives through the country to see the autumn colours are all great memories. This is time to share those stories and bring your autumn memories to the forefront, or even share your Halloween high jinks.

We mustn't forget those who have fought for us. Please bring with you war metals, pictures and songs that you may still have or share a story or two about that time and how it affected the lives of your families.

Christmases passed hold many memories such as getting your first pair of skates, your favorite doll or even your travels to grandma’s house. Let’s get together and share stories of a time for home and family. Participants are encouraged to bring a photo, favorite decoration or gift from their Christmas past.

Programs are $50 each for facilities within Dufferin county. $75 outside the county. HST is extra.
