W J (Jack) Hughes

William John "Jack" Hughes was born in Amaranth township in 1881, the year Dufferiwjhughes.jpg (3933 bytes)n County was incorporated. When he was a young boy, his mother died, leaving his father to care for the six children of the family. At a young age, Jack's family moved from Amaranth to Melancthon township, where they lived in difficult poverty.

 

hughesfamily.jpg (8466 bytes) With very little formal education (grade two level), Jack's ambition, his knack for business, and his sheer determination to build a better life for himself and his family yielded him great success in life. As founder and operator of W.J. Hughes & Sons Corn Flower Limited, Jack ran his business for 39 years with integrity and creativity.
