"W
J Hughes Corn Flower: Part of Our Canadian Heritage"
The 2011 Corn Flower
Exhibit spotlights the best pieces in the DCMA Corn Flower Collection.
Blanks were chosen for their colour or clarity. Cuts were chosen for
their size and abundance. Selected pieces were chosen by the Curator for
rarity. Many of the earlier examples in the collection also display a
variety of starbursts and designs cut on the bottoms and edges. In some,
the combination of blank, colour and cut make a particular bowl or
pitcher become a thing of beauty to be admired and certainly worthy of
collecting. To showcase the importance of these selected Corn Flower
pieces the cases will also hold important historic kitchenware and food
related items from Ontario homes circa 1800 to 1900. Handmade shelves,
boxes, bowls and other wooden wares all in their original finishes from
pioneer homes; spoons and flatware by early Canadian makers; Canadian
scene plates and flowered crocks all complement the colours and floral
cuts of W J Hughes Corn Flower. Whether you are a Corn Flower or
Canadiana collector, this exhibit features extraordinary examples rarely
seen but soon admired.
