ABOUT US

Land Acknowledgement

The Museum of Dufferin respectfully acknowledges that Dufferin County resides within the traditional territory and ancestral lands of the Tionontati (Pétun), Attawandaron (Neutral) Haudenosaunee (Six Nations), and Anishinaabe peoples.

We also acknowledge that various municipalities within the County of Dufferin reside within the treaty lands named under the Haldimand Deed of 1784 and two of the Williams Treaties of 1818: Treaty 18: the Nottawasaga Purchase, and Treaty 19: The Ajetance Treaty.

These traditional territories upon which we live and learn are steeped in rich Indigenous history and traditions. It is with this statement that we declare to honour and respect the past and present connection of Indigenous peoples with this land, its waterways and resources.

The Big Green Barn with the Red Roof

Perched in the rolling hills of Mulmur Township, the Museum of Dufferin (MoD) is more than a landmark — it’s a place where stories live.

Though our purpose-built museum opened here in 1994, our story began decades earlier. In 1963, the Dufferin County Historical Society founded the Shelburne Pioneer Museum, planting the seeds for what would grow into today’s vibrant institution. In 1988, the artifact collection was officially entrusted to Dufferin County, and by 1994, it found its permanent home in our iconic green barn.

The Museum of Dufferin Experience

Every visit offers something new.

Throughout the year, we present a wide range of exhibitions, events, workshops, camps, tours, and special programs designed to spark curiosity across generations. Whether you’re exploring local history, discovering regional art, attending a family program, or simply soaking in the views, there’s always a reason to return.

Our visitors, members, donors, volunteers, and partners are at the heart of everything we do. You are not just guests here — you are part of our story.

Increasingly, travellers heading between the GTA and Georgian Bay make us part of their journey. Some stop in for a quick stretch and a browse; others stay for the full experience. However long you visit, you’ll find:

  • Engaging exhibitions

  • Friendly, knowledgeable staff

  • Travel information and local insights

  • A thoughtfully curated gift shop

  • Spectacular countryside views

  • And yes — clean, welcoming washrooms

We like to think of the Museum of Dufferin as the place where city meets country, history meets creativity, and everyone feels at home.

Not Just a Barn...

Yes, we’re known as the big green barn with the red roof — but step inside and you’ll discover something much more.

Our building was thoughtfully designed in the style of a traditional Ontario bank barn, honouring the agricultural roots of the region. And true to barn-raising tradition, the community played a vital role in bringing it to life. From the very beginning, local support, donations, and shared stories have shaped who we are.

The Museum isn’t just inspired by community spirit — it’s built on it.

What's Here...

Our facility features three galleries and four historic buildings that host both long-term and rotating exhibitions, art shows, and community displays. We are also home to the Dufferin County Archives, preserving the documentary heritage of the region for future generations.

Whether you’re tracing your roots, exploring the past, or simply looking for an inspiring day out, the Museum of Dufferin is ready to welcome you.
