Red Dress DayMay 5th – 12th

Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People, is observed on May 5th. The day honours and brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in Canada. Métis artist Jaime Black began the REDress Project, an art installation, in 2010. Black gathered and hung hundreds of empty, red dresses to represent the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada. The Museum of Dufferin has prepared a display of red dresses that have been donated by the community. If you drive by the museum, you’ll see them on the front of our lawn. We think of the families and survivors as we mourn. There is much more work to be done to end the violence. The red dresses are a visual reminder to remember, reflect and take action.

“Together we can achieve justice and safety of our Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people.”

-Karen Vandenberg DCCRC Community Elder
