BORROW A MOBILITY DEVICE
Accessibility Rollator

The MoD offers one four-wheeled rollator available for visitors by the front entrance.

We kindly ask that you return it to the front desk at the end of your visit.

BUSY TIMES

The MoD usually becomes more busy around 2:00 PM on any given day.

On Wednesdays, the MoD hosts MoD Tots, a recurring program for babies and toddlers, resulting in a higher-than-usual level of noise in the main gallery.

The MoD hosts Summer Camps throughout the week during July and August. No camps are held on Saturdays during these months.

The MoD hosts Holiday Treasures Craft Market for two weeks during November, which is our busiest time of year. Please check our website for specific dates, contact us at info@dufferinmuseum.com or 519-941-1114.

ELEVATORS, RAMPS, AND ACCESSIBLE PARKING

Main Building

The Museum of Dufferin offers two designated accessible parking spaces conveniently located near the main entrance. A paved, barrier-free pathway leads directly to our accessible sliding doors. Inside, an elevator provides access to all levels of the museum. Every gallery is fully accessible to visitors using wheelchairs or other mobility devices, with the exception of the Dufferin House and Crombie’s Station in the Main Gallery. Both areas are equipped with iPad stations near the entrances. These iPads provide interior photos, as well as further information on each building.

Historic Corbetton Church

The historic Corbetton Church is located in the far corner of the museum’s parking lot. A ramp is available along the side of the building, along with a threshold ramp at the side entrance. Following renovations completed in 2025, the church’s pews were removed, and the central floor area is now wheelchair accessible. Please note that there is currently no ramp or handrail leading to the interior stage, and the pathway to the church remains rocky and unpaved. Further accessibility improvements are planned as renovations continue.

NOISE-CANCELLING HEADPHONES

Two pairs of noise-cancelling headphones are available for use at the front desk.

SENSORY MAP

A sensory map helps visitors understand what kinds of sights, sounds, smells, and other sensory experiences they may encounter throughout the museum. At the Museum of Dufferin, the sensory map covers all four floors of the building and highlights areas where visitors might experience different levels of sensory stimulation.

SENSORY SUPPORT BACKPACKS

The MoD has two sensory support backpacks from Autism Canada available for use at the front desk. Both backpacks include ear defenders, dark-tinted glasses, fidget tools, a fleece blanket, a soft plush teddy, and an information booklet about sensory kits.

SOCIAL NARRATIVE

A social narrative is a short guide that helps visitors understand what to expect during their visit. This resource covers a typical MoD experience experience step by step, from arriving and entering the building to moving through galleries and interacting with exhibits or staff. It uses clear language and photos to show what the spaces look like and describe what visitors might see, hear, or do during their visit. By reading the social narrative ahead of time, visitors, especially those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or other sensory or communication needs, can feel more prepared and comfortable when planning their trip to the museum.

WEBSITE ACCESSIBILITY

The MoD is committed to ongoing efforts to make our website more accessible and compliant with WCAG 2.0 standards. In addition to a simplified website layout, designed to be user-friendly, we have also added website accessibility tools. The accessibility features on this website are handled by a plug-in called “Ally”. The features of this plug-in can be accessed through the blue icon on the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Features include:

  • Increase and decrease text size
  • Grayscale
  • High contrast
  • Negative contrast
  • Light background
  • Underline links
  • Readable font

Users can click on one or more of these options to toggle them on or off. A reset button is located at the top right of the Ally menu.

This plug-in does not include an audio-reader feature. If using a third-party program to read this site, it is recommended to enable a skip-link function if available. All images on this site include alternative descriptive text.
